Walnut side table

Walnut side table Walnut side table veneered sock

Side table in solid walnut with burr walnut and satinwood veneers and ebony beading

Unusually, this piece utilises exotic woods - satinwood (Chloroxylon swietenia) and Macassar ebony (Diospyros celebica ) - for the elaborate table top, which is finished with traditional French polish. The frame and legs are in American black walnut (Juglans nigra), with contrasting satinwood "socks" at the feet. This is a luxurious item in Arts and Crafts terms, one that William Morris would have called state furniture: "...quite as much for beauty's sake as for use; we need not spare ornament on these, but may make them as elegant and elaborate as we can..."
